MTN Nigeria has provided explanations for why telecom subscribers often experience rapid data depletion on their mobile devices.

The company also reassured customers of renewed plans to ramp up investment in telecom infrastructure to deliver a more seamless and uninterrupted service experience across its network.

MTN offered the clarification and assurances during a public customer forum held in Lagos, tagged ‘Data On Trial’ (DOT), an initiative designed to address consumer complaints about fast data depletion.

Speaking at the forum, the Chief Executive Officer of MTN Nigeria, Karl Toriola, encouraged participants—who acted as prosecutors representing various subscriber groups—to freely express their concerns and ask questions regarding data usage and service quality.

One of the participants, identified as Timi Agbaje, questioned why subscribers’ data appears to deplete quickly on the MTN network and asked whether the company had resolved such issues in favour of customers over the past 12 months.

In response, members of MTN’s technical team, who served as defenders at the session, explained that the company had previously invited subscribers to its Lagos office to demonstrate its backend processes and how data consumption is measured.

They maintained that MTN operates with transparency in its data services and does not deliberately deplete customers’ data for profit.
