A late-night fire outbreak has destroyed several shops and office spaces along Murtala Mohammed Way in the Fagge Local Government Area of Kano State.
POLITICS NIGERIA reports that the incident occurred on Thursday night at a salvage yard popularly known as Takumbo Market, located near First City Monument Bank.
The fire later spread to nearby commercial buildings, leaving traders and business owners counting heavy losses.
The Kano State Fire Service said it received a distress call at about 10:54 p.m. and immediately deployed firefighters from its headquarters and other stations within the metropolis. Emergency responders battled the flames for several hours to prevent the inferno from spreading further in the busy commercial district.
According to the agency, the blaze had already engulfed a one-storey building and adjoining business premises before rescue teams arrived. Preliminary findings suggest that the fire may have been triggered by an electrical spark.
The inferno consumed a large quantity of goods stored at the salvage market before extending to surrounding properties. The upper section of the Kanawa Building was among the structures badly affected, with offices, parlours, and other facilities destroyed.
Stores belonging to TUSRAYS Nigeria Limited on the ground floor of the building were also damaged. On Friday, several traders were seen assessing the extent of the destruction and attempting to salvage what remained of their goods.
Fortunately, no lives were lost and no injuries were recorded.
The Director of the Kano State Fire Service, Alhaji Sani Anas, urged residents and business operators to prioritise electrical safety by ensuring that wiring systems are properly maintained.
He also advised the public to promptly report fire outbreaks to enable emergency teams to respond swiftly and contain such incidents before they escalate.
