The Lagos State Police Command has arrested four suspects in connection with the alleged mob killing of a Lagos man, Basit Kolade, who was reportedly weeks away from his wedding.
Kolade was allegedly attacked and beaten by a group of people following an altercation involving his vehicle and a motorcycle on Freeman Street, Lagos Island.
The incident occurred at about 10:40pm on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, according to the Lagos State Police Command. The police said the case was being treated as a homicide and that investigations had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti.
How the Incident Happened
According to the police, Kolade was travelling with his spouse from Ebute Metta towards Lagos Island in a black Lexus Jeep when a motorcycle allegedly collided with the vehicle from behind.
The collision reportedly led to an argument between Kolade and the motorcycle rider.
The situation reportedly escalated when Kolade reversed the vehicle and allegedly hit the motorcycle, causing both the rider and the motorcycle to fall.
The incident subsequently attracted the attention of people in the area, some of whom allegedly joined the confrontation.
Police said a group of individuals allegedly attacked Kolade with dangerous weapons during the ensuing violence.
While the attack was taking place, Kolade’s spouse was reportedly rescued by women in the area.
Kolade was subsequently rushed to the Lagos Island General Hospital, where he was confirmed dead.
The motorcycle rider survived the incident and was receiving medical treatment, according to the police.
Four Suspects Arrested
The Lagos State Police Command said four suspects had so far been arrested over the alleged killing.
They were identified as Khalid Rafiq, 20; Gafar Rahim, 21; Ibrahim Azeez, 33; and Samos Momoh, 21.
The police said efforts were ongoing to identify and apprehend other individuals who may have participated in the attack.
The command described the incident as a homicide case and said the suspects would be subjected to further investigation before appropriate legal action is taken.
Victim Was Preparing for His Wedding
The killing has generated concern because Kolade was reportedly in Nigeria ahead of his wedding, which was scheduled to take place later in September.
Reports said he had recently returned to the country for the ceremony before his life was suddenly cut short following the confrontation on Lagos Island.
The circumstances surrounding his death have also heightened concerns over the dangers of mob action and the tendency of disputes arising from road incidents to escalate into violence.
What began as an alleged disagreement following a traffic incident reportedly turned fatal within a short period, leaving Kolade dead and several people facing criminal investigation.
Police Begin Homicide Investigation
The police said the investigation had been transferred to the SCID in Panti to ensure further investigation into the circumstances surrounding Kolade’s death.
Investigators are expected to establish the sequence of events, identify everyone who participated in the alleged attack and determine the individual actions that contributed to the victim’s death.
The police are also expected to examine available evidence and obtain statements from witnesses and persons connected to the incident.
The command said efforts were continuing to arrest other persons suspected of involvement.
Renewed Concerns Over Mob Justice
The incident has once again drawn attention to the dangers of mob violence and extrajudicial punishment.
Security and legal authorities have consistently warned members of the public against taking laws into their own hands, particularly during disputes involving motorists, commercial transport operators and other road users.
Rather than resorting to violence, members of the public are expected to report suspected offences to law enforcement agencies, which have the responsibility to investigate allegations and bring suspects before the courts.
The Lagos incident demonstrates how quickly an ordinary disagreement can escalate when a crowd becomes involved.

For Kolade’s family, the incident has turned what should have been a period of celebration and preparation for marriage into a tragic loss.
The police have assured that the investigation will continue and that anyone found to have participated in the alleged killing will face appropriate legal proceedings.
As investigators work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the death, the four arrested suspects remain suspects and are presumed innocent unless and until they are proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction.
The Lagos State Police Command has also continued efforts to identify other persons allegedly involved in the attack as the investigation progresses.
