The Minister of Defence has called for a system that would enable every Nigerian to receive basic military training as part of efforts to strengthen national security and improve citizens’ preparedness to respond to emergencies.

The minister said such training could help promote discipline, patriotism and a stronger sense of responsibility among citizens, particularly at a time when Nigeria continues to face various security challenges.

He explained that the proposal was not necessarily aimed at turning every Nigerian into a member of the armed forces, but at ensuring that citizens acquire basic skills that could be useful during emergencies and national security situations.

According to him, exposing young Nigerians to basic military training could also encourage greater understanding of the responsibilities involved in protecting the country.

The minister noted that countries around the world have adopted different forms of military or civic training for citizens, with some using such programmes to develop discipline, leadership skills and national consciousness.

He said Nigeria could examine similar approaches while considering the country’s population, security needs and available resources.

The proposed training could include basic first aid, emergency response, disaster management, physical fitness, civic responsibilities and other introductory skills, depending on the framework eventually adopted by the government.

The minister stressed that strengthening national security should not be left solely to the armed forces and other security agencies, as citizens also have important roles to play in providing information, supporting community safety and responding responsibly during emergencies.

He also emphasised the need for any proposed programme to be properly structured, adequately funded and implemented in accordance with existing laws.

The proposal is expected to generate further discussions among policymakers, security experts and members of the public on the possible benefits, scope and implementation of nationwide military or civic training.

The Defence Ministry has continued to emphasise the importance of collaboration between security agencies and citizens in addressing Nigeria’s security challenges and promoting national stability.
