Zambian-American Influencer Sentenced to 18 Months for Hate Speech
“One Boss Lady” convicted under new cyber laws after remarks against President Hichilema

LUSAKA, Zambia — Zambian-American influencer and political vlogger Ethel Chisono Edwards, known online as “One Boss Lady”, has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for hate speech after making insulting remarks about President Hakainde Hichilema.

The 42-year-old, who also works as an estate agent in New York, was arrested three months ago at Zambia’s main airport while returning for her grandmother’s funeral.

Court Proceedings

Edwards pleaded guilty in a Lusaka magistrate’s court and apologised to the president. Magistrate Webster Milumbe said the ruling was intended as a strong warning, noting that hate speech had become increasingly common.

She was convicted under Zambia’s new Cyber Security Act and Cyber Crimes Act, which came into effect this year. Edwards admitted to publishing offensive statements online, conceding they were motivated by hatred.

Defence and Mitigation

Her lawyer, Joseph Katati, described her as a remorseful first offender and highlighted her role as a breadwinner and philanthropist, sponsoring a girls’ football team in Zambia. He delivered a detailed public apology on her behalf.

The magistrate acknowledged Katati’s plea but ruled the sentence would be effective from the time of her arrest. Katati said he had not yet received instructions on whether Edwards would appeal.

Divided Opinion

The sentencing has sparked debate in Zambia. Supporters say it was necessary to curb hate speech, while critics argue it undermines freedom of expression.

President Hichilema, who came to power in 2021, abolished criminal defamation laws against the presidency, but prosecutions continue under other legislation. In September, two men were jailed for two years after attempting to use witchcraft to kill Hichilema.
