Kwara State Government Launches Massive School Renovation Drive

The Kwara State Government has initiated a comprehensive renovation of public secondary schools across the state, with plans to upgrade at least 898 schools under the World Bank-supported Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE) Project. The move is part of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s education reform agenda, aimed at transforming learning environments and expanding access to quality education.

At a high-level sensitisation meeting in Ilorin, stakeholders were briefed on the implementation strategy, with Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Dr Lawal Olohungbebe, leading the engagement. “This intervention reflects the administration’s sustained commitment to improving education in Kwara State,” he said.

Technical Service Providers have been deployed to work with School-Based Management Committees (SBMCs) in 111 pilot schools, with 50% of the total contract sum released to kick-start work. The first phase covers 24 schools in Asa Local Government Area, 25 in Ilorin West, 10 in Offa, 16 in Oyun, and 18 each in Ilorin East and Ilorin South.

Olohungbebe explained that 56.7% of the pilot schools fall under the small grants category, while 43.2% are under the medium grants category. The phase will serve as a benchmark for subsequent expansion across public secondary schools in the state.

The AGILE Project, backed by the World Bank and other development partners, is a central part of Kwara state’s strategy to improve educational infrastructure and learning outcomes, with a particular focus on adolescent girls. The project aims to address the infrastructure deficit in schools, enhance the quality of education, and promote girls’ education.

The renovation drive is expected to benefit thousands of students and teachers, providing a conducive learning environment and improving academic outcomes.
