MOSCOW — Russian President Vladimir Putin has cautiously welcomed a new U.S. peace proposal aimed at ending Moscow’s nearly four-year war in Ukraine, signaling a rare opening for potential negotiations.
Putin said the plan could serve as a foundation for a settlement but stressed the need for “substantive discussion of all the details.”
Terms of the Proposal
According to reports, the proposal aligns with several of Putin’s long-standing demands, including:
- Ukraine surrendering territory
- Reducing the size of its army
- Abandoning its pursuit of NATO membership
These conditions have been firmly rejected by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who insists Ukraine will not give up its sovereign land.
Stalled Talks, Ongoing Fighting
Peace talks between the two sides remain stalled as fighting continues along the front lines.
In an address Friday, Zelenskyy warned that Ukraine has reached a pivotal moment, suggesting citizens may soon face difficult decisions as international negotiations intensify.
