Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has said the re-election of President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election remains constantly on his mind, stressing that he is committed to mobilising support for the President’s second-term bid.
Wike made the statement on Monday during town hall meetings with the Rumueme and Apara kingdoms in the Obio-Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State. He urged residents to support Tinubu, citing what he described as the President’s recognition of Rivers State through government appointments and developmental projects.
The former Rivers State governor said his support for Tinubu was not merely a political calculation, but a commitment he had continued to demonstrate ahead of the 2027 election.
“Each day I sleep, I am thinking about the President’s re-election. When I am eating, I think about the President’s re-election. Everything I am doing now is about the President’s re-election,” Wike said.
He called on Rivers residents to put political sentiments aside and support the President, arguing that Tinubu’s administration had recognised the people of the state through appointments and what he described as dividends of democracy.
“Let us forget sentiment and vote for the person who has recognised the people of Rivers State with dividends of democracy and with several appointments,” Wike said.
The FCT minister also expressed confidence in Tinubu’s prospects for the 2027 election, saying he believed the President’s re-election campaign would be easier than the 2023 contest.
“I know the re-election of Tinubu in 2027 will be easier than that of 2023. We should appreciate Tinubu and ensure he gets a massive number of votes. We can do it,” he stated.
Wike has, in recent weeks, repeatedly stated that securing a second term for Tinubu is his major political priority. In September, he said his primary concern was ensuring the President returned to office in 2027 and dismissed claims that his political activities were aimed at destabilising existing political parties.
He has also defended the Rainbow Coalition, a cross-party political platform associated with his mobilisation efforts for Tinubu. Wike has maintained that the coalition is separate from the All Progressives Congress and is intended to bring together individuals from different political parties who support the President’s re-election.
According to him, supporting Tinubu at the presidential level does not prevent political parties from fielding candidates for governorship, National Assembly and State House of Assembly elections.
Wike’s position has, however, generated political debate, particularly within the ruling APC and among opposition parties. The minister has continued to insist that politicians facing challenges in their respective states should resolve them locally rather than use Tinubu’s re-election campaign as a platform for settling internal political disputes.
During Monday’s town hall meetings, Wike also criticised opposition politicians, including former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar and former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi, who are associated with the African Democratic Congress. He questioned the strength of their political structure in Rivers State and argued that they would face difficulties in securing the required level of support in the state.
He also criticised Peter Obi and other opposition figures, describing them as “unelectable politicians,” while urging his supporters not to become distracted by internal disagreements and communal disputes ahead of the 2027 elections.
Wike’s renewed mobilisation for Tinubu comes as political activities surrounding the 2027 presidential election continue to intensify across the country. The FCT minister has repeatedly linked his political activities to his determination to secure support for Tinubu, including in Rivers State and the Federal Capital Territory.
Earlier this month, Wike even said he would resign from his position as FCT minister if Tinubu failed to secure the FCT and Rivers State in the 2027 presidential election, underscoring the extent of his publicly stated commitment to the President’s re-election campaign.
As political parties and emerging coalitions prepare for the 2027 contest, Wike’s continued campaign for Tinubu is expected to remain a significant part of the political conversation, particularly given his position as a PDP member serving in the APC-led Federal Government.
For Wike, however, the message remains clear: his immediate political focus is on mobilising support for President Tinubu and securing his re-election in 2027.
