COTONOU, Benin — Thirty people, most of them soldiers, have been jailed in connection with the failed coup attempt earlier this month, according to reports from AFP.
Coup Attempt
- On 7 December, rebel soldiers seized state television and announced the government had been dissolved.
- The takeover was quickly thwarted by loyalist forces, backed by Nigerian airstrikes, military assistance from West African allies, and French logistical support.
Legal Proceedings
- The accused were jailed on Tuesday after a pre-trial hearing.
- Charges include treason, murder, and endangering state security.
Fugitive Leader
- Coup leader Lt. Col. Pascal Tigri remains at large.
- Officials say he fled to Lomé, Togo, and Benin has requested his extradition along with other fugitive soldiers.
Rebel Claims
The soldiers accused President Patrice Talon of:
- Mishandling security in northern Benin.
- Cutting health care and public services.
- Clamping down on political activities.
