A South African court has dismissed an appeal by the country’s heritage body to stop the sale and export of several personal items belonging to Nelson Mandela, including a Robben Island prison key, Aviator sunglasses, and one of his iconic floral shirts.

The 70 items, owned by Mandela’s eldest daughter Makaziwe and Christo Brand, a former Robben Island warden, were set to be auctioned in the US. The South African Heritage Resources Agency (Sahra) had argued the items were part of the country’s heritage and shouldn’t be exported.

The Supreme Court of Appeal ruled Sahra’s interpretation of protected items was “overly broad,” and Mandela’s family can proceed with the sale. The proceeds will reportedly fund a memorial garden at Mandela’s grave in Eastern Cape.

Makaziwe Mandela welcomed the ruling, saying, “Nobody is more invested in ensuring Tata’s legacy endures than those who carry his name.” The decision has sparked debate, with some arguing the items should remain in South Africa and others backing the family’s right to decide.

The items up for auction also include a signed copy of the South African Constitution, Mandela’s ID card, and gifts from world leaders like the Obamas.
