The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has alerted the public over the circulation of fraudulent links claiming to be a 2026 student loan registration portal, warning Nigerians to disregard such messages and rely only on its official channels.
In a statement posted on its official X account, NELFUND said the fake messages are part of ongoing scam attempts targeting applicants of its interest-free student loan scheme.
The agency said the fraudulent notice falsely claimed that President Bola Tinubu had issued a directive approving a new registration portal due to complaints from students. It also promoted unverified links allegedly for loan registration and cash disbursement.
NELFUND described the claims as misleading and urged students and the general public to remain vigilant against misinformation, fake news, and online fraud.
“Please ensure you verify all links and rely only on our official channels for accurate information. Remain vigilant against misinformation, fake news, and potential scams,” the agency stated.
It noted that similar scams had been circulating since 2025, with fraudsters repeatedly using fake presidential directives to deceive unsuspecting applicants.
The student loan scheme operates under the Student Loan (Access to Higher Education) Act, 2024, signed into law by President Bola Tinubu. It provides interest-free loans covering tuition and monthly upkeep, with repayment scheduled to begin two years after completion of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
