President Bola Tinubu has approved a series of strategic appointments and renewals in key education institutions under the Federal Ministry of Education, aiming to boost technical education, examinations, and knowledge preservation across Nigeria.
In a statement issued Wednesday by Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu named Prof. Modupe Adelabu as Chairman of the Governing Board of the National Examinations Council (NECO), while retaining Prof. Ibrahim Wushishi as Registrar.
Adelabu, a retired Professor of Educational Administration from Obafemi Awolowo University, previously served as Deputy Governor of Ekiti State (2013-2014) and NBTE Chairman (2018-2021).
For the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), the President appointed Prof. Babatunde Salako as Chairman. Salako, a renowned researcher and former Director General of the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR) from 2016 to 2024, brings expertise in higher education governance. On April 10, Tinubu also reappointed Prof. Idris M. Bugaje as NBTE Executive Secretary for a second five-year term.
In Plateau State, Dr. Bongfa Binfa, a PhD holder in Mechanical Engineering from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, was appointed Rector of the Federal Polytechnic, N’yak-Shendam, for a single five-year term. Binfa, from Plateau, succeeds pioneer Rector Dr. Mukaila Zakari Ya’u whose tenure ended March 16, 2026. He previously served as Deputy Rector (Academic) at the Federal Polytechnic of Oil and Gas, Bonny, and lectured at Federal Polytechnic, Idah.
President Tinubu further renewed Prof. Chinwe Anunobi’s tenure as Director/Chief Executive of the National Library of Nigeria for a final five-year term, following her initial appointment in September 2021. Under her leadership, the institution has launched reforms like the National Repository of Nigeria, Newspaper and Magazine Locator, and National Virtual Library. “The President expects that the renewal of her tenure would ensure continuity in the implementation of ongoing reforms, completion of the National Library Headquarters project, and execution of the 2025-2030 Strategic Plan,” the statement noted.
