United We Stand: A look inside President Tinubu’s national unity agenda

In some circles, it is not unusual to hear pessimistic views about Nigeria’s unity and doubts about the possibility of bridging its deep-seated divisions. I have consistently maintained that when leadership strives toward the highest ideals, meaningful change—though gradual—remains attainable. In a diverse society like Nigeria, complete uniformity of thought and total consensus on every issue may be unrealistic. However, with capable leadership that can effectively manage complexities, the prospects for national cohesion can be greatly strengthened.

No nation exists without its share of discontent. It is therefore essential to properly situate disagreements among ethnic groups, religious communities, and citizens within the broader context of national unity. The fact that individuals—whether Moses or Ibrahim—hold differing opinions does not signify a breakdown of unity. Disagreement is a natural aspect of human interaction, reflective of our inherent complexity.

Equally important is the understanding that national unity does not require superficial harmony or forced conformity. Rather, it entails a collective commitment by citizens to uphold the rule of law, safeguard peace, contribute to progress, and actively support national development. It also involves backing leadership on policies and initiatives designed to serve the common good.

This raises key questions: What are the underlying principles of national cohesion? How can unity be reinforced? Are we more united today than we were at the beginning of this journey? And what steps has President Bola Tinubu’s administration taken to build a shared national future?

These questions deserve careful consideration.

At its core, national cohesion is driven by inclusive governance, economic integration, and equitable citizenship. Governance and economic opportunity are the twin pillars that sustain unity. It is impossible to meaningfully discuss national unity without considering leadership effectiveness and the fair distribution of resources. Strengthening unity therefore requires ensuring that all citizens—irrespective of religion, ethnicity, or social status—benefit from public resources, while governance remains fair and just.

In this regard, the Tinubu administration has made notable strides. By applying these principles, the government has ensured that all six geopolitical zones benefit from its policies, programmes, and projects.

For example, the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has reached over 1.5 million beneficiaries nationwide, with significant participation from the northern region. Similarly, initiatives such as the Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) programme, presidential grants for small and medium enterprises, and conditional cash transfers for vulnerable households have been implemented with broad national impact.

No region has been left out. Major infrastructure projects span all geopolitical zones, including the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, the Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway, the Calabar-Ebonyi-Benue-Kogi-Nasarawa-Abuja Super Highway, and the Akwanga-Jos-Bauchi-Gombe-Biu-Maiduguri Road.

The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway cuts across several states, while the Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway connects key northern and southern regions. Beyond their physical scope, these projects serve as catalysts for economic growth, job creation, and regional integration.

Across the country, numerous road projects are underway: in the South-East, the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway and Enugu-Port Harcourt Road; in the South-West, the Lagos-Badagry Expressway, Ibadan-Ijebu Ode Road, and Oyo-Ogbomoso Expressway; in the North-West and North-Central, the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano Dual Carriageway and other strategic corridors; and in the North-East, projects such as the Kano-Maiduguri Expressway, Maiduguri-Monguno Road, and the Gamboru Bridge rehabilitation.

These efforts reflect a principle of fairness—what benefits one region is extended to others.

Inclusive governance also stands out as a hallmark of the administration. President Tinubu has appointed a diverse group of young professionals to key positions, marking a significant shift in Nigeria’s governance landscape. For the first time, younger leaders are overseeing critical sectors of government.

Furthermore, longstanding concerns about the ethnic composition of service chiefs have been addressed with a balanced approach that prioritizes both competence and national unity.

Three years into his tenure, President Tinubu continues to pursue a unifying agenda—strengthening the nation’s fabric, fostering cohesion, and shaping a shared future for all Nigerians.

It is evident that through deliberate, visionary leadership, the bonds that hold the nation together have been reinforced and made more resilient.
