LASCOPA Recovers Over N260m, $10,000 for Consumers

The Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA) has recovered more than N260 million and $10,000 on behalf of consumers through its intervention in complaints involving banks, electricity distribution companies and airlines.

The agency’s General Manager, Afolabi Solebo, disclosed this during a visit to the head office of Vintage Press Ltd, publishers of The Nation newspapers, in Matori, Lagos. The visit was conducted alongside officials of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC).

Solebo revealed that over N200 million was secured in credit adjustments for customers of Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) and Ikeja Electric, following complaints related to billing and other service issues.

He added that the agency also recovered more than N40 million and $10,000 from both local and international airlines after customers reported various grievances.

In the banking sector, LASCOPA facilitated the recovery of over N60 million through negotiations over erroneous transfers, failed Point of Sale (POS) transactions and Automated Teller Machine (ATM) disputes.

According to Solebo, these recoveries were achieved through strategic interventions aimed at preventing exploitation and ensuring consumers receive value for their money.

Also speaking, the Southwest Zonal Coordinator of FCCPC, Dr. Olubunmi Otti, highlighted the commission’s collaboration with LASCOPA to strengthen consumer protection and promote a fair marketplace in Lagos State.

She identified common unfair practices affecting consumers, including the failure of supermarkets to display prices, discrepancies between shelf prices and checkout charges, poor product labelling, and the non-delivery of goods purchased online.
