The Nigeria Police Force has dismissed claims of a purported “hit list” ahead of the 2026 Osun State governorship election, even as the Accord Party accused security agencies of targeting its members in an alleged crackdown.
In a statement addressing the allegations, the police described the claims as unfounded and misleading, insisting that there is no such list in existence. The force maintained that its operations in Osun State are strictly guided by the law and aimed at maintaining peace and security as political activities intensify.
According to the police, their primary responsibility is to ensure a safe and level playing field for all political actors, stressing that they remain neutral and committed to upholding democratic principles. They urged the public to disregard what they termed as baseless reports capable of inciting unnecessary tension in the state.
However, the Accord Party raised concerns over what it described as increasing harassment and intimidation of its members, alleging that security operatives have been targeting its supporters under the guise of maintaining order. The party called for transparency and fairness, warning that any form of selective enforcement could undermine the credibility of the electoral process.
Political observers have noted that tensions are gradually rising in Osun as preparations for the 2026 governorship election gather momentum. They emphasised the need for all stakeholders, including security agencies and political parties, to exercise restraint and adhere to democratic norms.
The police, in response, reiterated their commitment to professionalism and impartiality, assuring residents that adequate measures are in place to prevent violence and ensure a peaceful electoral process.
