DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania — Authorities in Tanzania have released four opposition figures who were arrested in connection with deadly election protests in October.

Among those freed on bail is John Heche, vice-chairman of the opposition party CHADEMA, who had been detained since October 22 on suspicion of terrorism, according to his lawyer.

Background to the Arrests

The protests erupted on the eve of the general election, which President Samia Suluhu Hassan won with nearly 98% of the vote. Observers have described the unrest as the country’s most serious political crisis in recent history.

CHADEMA has alleged that as many as 1,000 people were killed by security forces during the demonstrations. Tanzanian authorities have not confirmed any death toll. In her inauguration speech, President Hassan acknowledged fatalities but did not announce an investigation.

Ongoing Legal Proceedings

On Friday, prosecutors charged at least 145 individuals with treason over their alleged involvement in the protests. The release of the four opposition figures comes as the government continues to pursue legal action against others linked to the unrest.

The developments highlight the deep political divisions in Tanzania following the election and raise questions about how the government will address opposition concerns moving forward.
