DRC Rebels Announce Conditional Withdrawal from Uvira Amid Peace Pressure

PoliticsDRC Rebels Announce Conditional Withdrawal from Uvira Amid Peace Pressure

UVIRA, Democratic Republic of Congo — The rebel coalition Alliance Fleuve Congo (AFC/M23) has announced a conditional withdrawal of its fighters from the strategic city of Uvira in South Kivu province, following intense international pressure to uphold peace commitments.

Rebel Statement

In a message posted on social media, the group described the pullback as a “trust-building measure” to support ongoing negotiations under the Doha peace framework. The rebels said the decision was aimed at strengthening dialogue and revitalising peace talks with Congolese authorities.

Background

  • Uvira was captured by M23 forces earlier this month, defying a US-mediated peace deal signed in December between Presidents Félix Tshisekedi of DR Congo and Paul Kagame of Rwanda.
  • The offensive displaced thousands of civilians and drew sharp criticism from Kinshasa and international partners.
  • The city’s fall had been seen as a major setback to fragile peace efforts.

International Pressure

The United States and other partners urged both sides to avoid further bloodshed and respect peace arrangements. Analysts say the withdrawal could ease tensions but warn that conditions attached to the move may complicate implementation.

Humanitarian Concerns

The situation in eastern Congo remains volatile, with civilians bearing the brunt of the conflict. Aid agencies continue to highlight regional security risks and the urgent need for humanitarian support.
