A High Court in Ogun State has declared Jimi Lawal as the duly recognised governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the state, bringing a new twist to the party’s internal leadership dispute ahead of forthcoming elections.
The court’s ruling followed a suit filed to resolve disagreements over the authenticity of the party’s primary election and the legitimacy of candidates presented by different factions within the ADC. Delivering judgment, the court affirmed that the process which produced Jimi Lawal as the party’s flagbearer complied with relevant electoral guidelines and party regulations.
According to the court, evidence presented showed that the primary election that produced Lawal was conducted in line with the provisions of the Electoral Act and monitored by appropriate authorities. The judge subsequently dismissed claims by opposing factions, ruling that their submissions lacked sufficient merit to invalidate the outcome of the primary.
Reacting to the judgment, Lawal described the verdict as a victory for democracy and the rule of law. He commended the judiciary for what he called a fair and courageous decision, while urging party members to unite and focus on strengthening the ADC’s chances in the state.
“This judgment has reaffirmed the will of the people and the integrity of our internal processes. It is time for all stakeholders to come together and move the party forward,” he said.
The ruling is expected to settle lingering tensions within the party, which had been grappling with parallel claims to its governorship ticket. Political observers note that such disputes are not uncommon in Nigeria’s party system, especially in the lead-up to major elections.
Meanwhile, representatives of the opposing faction are yet to indicate whether they will challenge the ruling at a higher court. Legal experts say they retain the right to appeal if dissatisfied with the judgment.
