DSS Reportedly Captures Sixth Owo Church Attackers

The Department of State Services (DSS) has arrested Sani Yusuf, the sixth suspect involved in the 2022 St. Francis Catholic Church attack in Owo, Ondo state, where over 40 worshippers were killed. Yusuf, a high-profile commander of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), was arrested in Iguosa community, Edo State, after evading capture for nearly four years.

Yusuf has confessed to planning and executing the Owo church massacre, as well as other terrorist attacks, including the Suleja military barracks attack and kidnappings in Kaduna State. He also served under other ISWAP top commanders, like Abu Ikirimah, who was arrested by the DSS in 2024.¹

The DSS is currently prosecuting five other suspects involved in the attack. This arrest marks a significant milestone in the pursuit of justice for the victims and underscores the DSS’s relentless campaign against terrorism.
