Lecturers at Kaduna State University (KASU) have suspended their industrial action following the Kaduna State Government’s approval of the implementation and domestication of the 2025 Federal Government–Academic Staff Union of Universities (FGN-ASUU) agreement for academic staff of the institution.
The KASU chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities announced the suspension after its congress unanimously accepted the approvals granted by the state government, the university’s Governing Council and management.
The suspension took effect from 12:01 a.m. on Friday, September 18, 2026, paving the way for the resumption of academic activities at the university.
Salary Agreement Takes Effect in October
Under the agreement approved by Governor Uba Sani, the implementation and domestication of the 2025 FGN-ASUU agreement for KASU academic staff will commence with the October 2026 salary.
The approved package includes the revised Consolidated University Academic Salary Structure (CONUASS), the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA), as well as other applicable salary adjustments and allowances contained in the agreement.
The Kaduna State Government had earlier constituted a nine-member Government–KASU/ASUU Negotiation Committee to examine the lecturers’ demands and develop what it described as a sustainable framework for resolving the dispute.
Nine Months’ Arrears Approved
In addition to the new salary structure, the university’s Governing Council and management approved the commencement of payment of nine months’ accrued arrears, covering the period from January to September 2026.
The union described the development as a significant step towards addressing its concerns and restoring industrial harmony at the institution.
ASUU said the approvals would improve staff welfare, strengthen staff retention and contribute to greater productivity among academic staff.
Strike Followed Lingering Grievances
The KASU-ASUU strike followed a prolonged dispute over issues including salaries, earned allowances, promotion arrears and aspects of the implementation of the 2025 FGN-ASUU agreement.
The union had earlier embarked on a two-week warning strike before proceeding to indefinite industrial action when some of its demands remained unresolved.
The state government had previously approved a one-off ₦300 million payment for Earned Academic Allowance, aimed at addressing part of an accumulated backlog reportedly exceeding ₦800 million and dating back to 2016.
Union Commends Government
Following the latest approvals, the ASUU leadership commended Governor Uba Sani, the government’s negotiation team, the KASU Governing Council and university management for their roles in resolving the dispute.
The union particularly noted that negotiations were conducted without threats or intimidation and described the process as an indication of respect for due process and constructive industrial relations.
ASUU also appealed to students to prepare for the resumption of academic activities, saying it looked forward to welcoming them back to the classrooms.
Government Calls for Industrial Harmony
The Kaduna State Government had earlier urged ASUU and other university-based unions to embrace dialogue as the preferred means of resolving disagreements.
The Commissioner for Education, Prof. Abubakar Sani Sambo, said improved staff welfare should translate into better teaching, research, innovation and student outcomes at KASU.
The government has also highlighted other interventions at the university, including funding for academic operations and support for programme accreditation.
With the suspension of the strike, attention will now shift to the implementation of the approved salary agreement and payment of the outstanding arrears, as well as the restoration of normal academic activities at Kaduna State University.
