Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajed Sanwo-Olu, has formalized the state’s entry into the Under2 Coalition by signing a Memorandum of Understanding with the Climate Group. The Under2 Coalition is the world’s largest network of subnational governments committed to net-zero emissions and building climate-resilient economies.
The MoU was signed on Monday in London during London Climate Ection Week 2026, according to a statement by the Governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Gboyega Akosile. The move highlights Lagos’ growing role in global climate leadership and reinforces its focus on innovative solutions for sustainable development, economic growth, and resilience.
Convened by the Climate Group, the Under2 Coalition brings together over 180 states and regions that account for more than half of the global economy. Member governments work together to speed up climate action, share best practices, and support the shift to a net-zero, climate-resilient future.The MoU is non-binding. It aligns with Lagos’ existing climate goals without creating legal obligations, while signaling a shared commitment to stronger cooperation with subnational governments worldwide.
The signing took place as Governor Sanwo-Olu participated in London Climate Action Week, where Lagos showcased its climate governance and financing models. Key highlights included the state’s State-Determined Contributions framework and a pipeline of investment-ready climate projects.Speaking on the development, Sanwo-Olu said: “Cities and regions are now leading climate action.
