The Supreme Council for Sharia in Nigeria has cautioned against hastily amending the Constitution in relation to the creation of state police, urging authorities to adopt a more deliberate and inclusive approach.
The council expressed concern that rushing such a critical reform could lead to unintended consequences, stressing the need for thorough consultations with stakeholders across the country. It noted that issues surrounding security and policing require careful consideration to ensure that any changes serve the collective interest of all Nigerians.
According to the council, while the idea of state police may offer potential benefits, it must be approached with caution to avoid misuse, political interference, or threats to national unity. The group called on lawmakers to prioritise dialogue, transparency, and consensus-building before proceeding with any constitutional amendments.
The council further emphasised the importance of safeguarding citizens’ rights and maintaining balance within the nation’s security framework, urging that reforms be guided by equity, justice, and long-term stability rather than urgency.
