Former Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai (retd.), has denied claims that he personally received $1 billion allocated for arms procurement, insisting that the funds were released to the Ministry of Defence.

Buratai clarified that the money was meant for defence-related purposes and was not paid into his personal account, distancing himself from allegations suggesting personal involvement in the handling of the funds.

The former army chief’s response comes amid renewed scrutiny of military spending and the management of funds allocated to Nigeria’s security sector.

He maintained that the appropriate government institutions were responsible for handling the funds, as questions continue to emerge over accountability and transparency in defence expenditure.

The controversy has renewed calls for proper oversight of public funds allocated to the military, particularly amid Nigeria’s ongoing security challenges.
