In the first half of 2026, the Federal Government disbursed more than N45.2 billion in consumer credit to over 300,000 Nigerians, as part of efforts to expand financial inclusion and improve access to affordable loans.
The milestone was highlighted in the Nigerian Consumer Credit Corporation (CREDICORP)’s H2 2026 outlook, which also set a target of reaching 500,000 beneficiaries by December. The corporation said it is intensifying efforts to scale up access to credit, increase loan volumes, mobilise funding, and strengthen partnerships with lenders and vendors nationwide.
According to the report, priority sectors include mobility, digital devices, energy solutions, home improvement and essential goods, enabling Nigerians to acquire productive assets that enhance livelihoods.
CREDICORP noted that its operations have expanded significantly since its launch in 2024, with 36 participating financial institutions, support for 15 local industries, and a zero non-performing loan record. It added that many beneficiaries are first-time borrowers, with women and young people making up a significant share.
The corporation also reported progress in promoting financial literacy through its Consumer Credit Index, which measures awareness and usage of credit across the country. Findings show improved understanding of responsible borrowing among Nigerians.
As part of its sustainability drive, the agency said its green financing initiative has supported access to climate-friendly assets, reduced carbon emissions, and will be expanded further before the end of the year.
CREDICORP reaffirmed its commitment to building a robust consumer credit ecosystem that drives inclusive growth, improves living standards, and supports long-term economic development.
