The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has raised concerns over the continued prevalence of child marriage, reporting that approximately one in five girls worldwide is still married before reaching the age of 18.
The situation remains a major concern for children’s rights advocates, as early marriage can disrupt girls’ education, affect their health and limit their future opportunities.
UNICEF has continued to call on governments, communities and other stakeholders to strengthen efforts to end the practice through education, public awareness and the enforcement of laws protecting children.
The organisation has also emphasised the importance of empowering girls, supporting vulnerable families and addressing poverty and harmful social norms that contribute to child marriage.
UNICEF maintains that every girl should have the opportunity to complete her education, make informed decisions about her future and enjoy a safe childhood free from early marriage.
