College Calls on Federal, State Governments to Adopt Consultant Pharmacist Cadre

The Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria’s College of Consultant Pharmacists has urged the Federal Government and state governments to adopt the consultant pharmacist cadre as part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s healthcare system.

The college said integrating consultant pharmacists into the health sector would enhance patient care, improve medication management, and align Nigeria’s pharmaceutical practice with global standards.

According to the body, consultant pharmacists possess advanced clinical expertise that enables them to contribute significantly to multidisciplinary healthcare teams, particularly in managing complex medical conditions and optimising drug therapy outcomes.

It stressed that recognising the cadre across federal and state health institutions would not only improve service delivery but also create a clear career progression pathway for pharmacists in Nigeria.

The college further noted that the adoption of the consultant pharmacist structure would support ongoing health sector reforms and contribute to better health outcomes for patients nationwide.

It called on relevant authorities to prioritise policy frameworks and institutional backing necessary for the full implementation of the cadre across the country.
