President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s latest changes to Nigeria’s security architecture have sparked fresh speculation over the role of National Security Adviser (NSA) Nuhu Ribadu.
The debate follows the appointment of retired Major General Adeyinka Famadewa as Special Adviser on Homeland Security, a position that some observers believe could reduce the influence traditionally exercised by the NSA. However, the Presidency has previously said the new office is intended to work alongside Ribadu rather than replace him. (The Northern Star)
The development has nevertheless fuelled questions over whether Ribadu’s responsibilities are being gradually redistributed.
Ribadu remains the National Security Adviser, and available reports do not establish that Tinubu has formally demoted or removed him. The controversy therefore appears to centre on the changing structure of the security administration rather than a confirmed reduction in his official rank.
