A former commissioner in Kogi State has called for power rotation among the three senatorial districts, insisting that the Kogi West Senatorial District should be given the opportunity to produce the next governor of the state.
The former commissioner made the call while speaking on the political developments ahead of the 2027 governorship election in the state.
According to him, equitable power rotation remains important to promoting fairness, inclusion and political balance among the different parts of Kogi State.
He argued that the governorship should not remain concentrated in one senatorial district for extended periods, stressing that other zones should also be given an opportunity to produce the state’s chief executive.
The former commissioner maintained that Kogi West has qualified politicians and professionals capable of providing leadership at the state level. He urged political stakeholders in the state to consider the principle of rotation when discussing the 2027 governorship contest.
He said such an arrangement would help strengthen unity among the people and reduce tensions that could arise from perceptions of political exclusion.
The former commissioner also called on political parties and their leaders to create a level playing field for aspirants from Kogi West and allow voters to determine their preferred candidate through credible internal processes.
He urged politicians across the three senatorial districts to prioritise the overall interest of the state rather than allowing the 2027 contest to deepen political divisions.
The demand comes as political activities gradually intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, with potential aspirants and political groups beginning to position themselves for various elective positions.
The governorship contest is expected to generate increased political activity across the state as parties begin consultations and preparations for their nomination processes.
The former commissioner said the debate over zoning and power rotation should be approached through dialogue among political stakeholders, noting that fairness and inclusiveness would be important in sustaining political stability in Kogi State.
He further urged residents to pay attention to the competence, character, experience and programmes of prospective candidates when the political parties begin presenting their options.
