The Federal Government has commenced the training of 5,000 smart meter installers across the country as part of a broader effort to improve electricity supply, enhance billing transparency, and reduce estimated billing for consumers.
The initiative, driven by the Federal Government of Nigeria in collaboration with key stakeholders in the power sector, is designed to address the persistent metering gap and strengthen Nigeria’s electricity distribution system. Officials say the programme will equip participants with the technical skills required to install, maintain, and manage smart metering infrastructure nationwide.
According to authorities, the training will be conducted in phases across the six geopolitical zones, ensuring equitable participation and nationwide coverage. Beneficiaries, drawn largely from young Nigerians, will receive both theoretical and hands-on practical training in modern metering technologies, safety standards, and customer service best practices.
The government noted that the introduction of smart meters is a critical component of ongoing power sector reforms aimed at improving efficiency and accountability within electricity distribution companies. Smart meters allow for real-time monitoring of electricity consumption, eliminate arbitrary billing, and empower consumers with better control over their energy usage.
Industry experts have long identified the lack of accurate metering as one of the major challenges facing Nigeria’s power sector. The rollout of trained installers is expected to accelerate meter deployment, reduce energy losses, and enhance revenue collection across the value chain.
Officials further explained that the programme aligns with the government’s commitment to job creation and skills development, particularly among youths. By building a pool of certified installers, the initiative is expected not only to support the power sector but also to create employment opportunities and stimulate economic growth.
The training also complements existing interventions such as the National Mass Metering Programme, which aims to close the metering gap and improve service delivery to electricity consumers.
Stakeholders have welcomed the development, describing it as a timely intervention that could significantly improve trust between electricity providers and consumers. They, however, stressed the importance of sustained implementation, proper regulation, and continuous monitoring to ensure the long-term success of the initiative.
As the programme unfolds, the Federal Government reiterated its commitment to modernising Nigeria’s power infrastructure and ensuring that all citizens have access to reliable, transparent, and affordable electricity services.
