A Las Vegas jury has found Duane “Keffe D” Davis, a former Los Angeles gang leader, guilty of the 1996 murder of rap legend Tupac Shakur, bringing one of music’s most enduring unsolved cases to a dramatic conclusion nearly 30 years after the killing.
Guilty Verdict Delivered
After only a few hours of deliberation, jurors convicted the 63-year-old of first-degree murder with the use of a deadly weapon.
The verdict means Davis could face life imprisonment without the possibility of parole when he is sentenced on 13 October.
Following the decision, Davis told the court he intends to appeal.
The Case Against Davis
Prosecutors argued that Davis orchestrated the killing after a violent confrontation involving his nephew and members of Shakur’s entourage at a Las Vegas casino on 7 September 1996.
According to the prosecution, Davis gathered associates, obtained a firearm, and pursued the rapper in retaliation.
A few hours after the casino altercation, a white Cadillac pulled alongside the BMW carrying Shakur and Death Row Records co-founder Marion “Suge” Knight. Shots were fired into the vehicle, fatally wounding Shakur, who died six days later at the age of 25.
Knight survived the attack despite being injured.
Memoir Revived Investigation
For decades, the case remained one of America’s most famous cold cases due to a lack of evidence.
Investigators gained fresh momentum after Davis published his memoir, Compton Street Legend, in 2019.
In the book, Davis admitted being inside the Cadillac during the shooting and described passing a gun to individuals seated in the back, although he did not identify the shooter.
Prosecutors also presented recordings of Davis discussing his alleged involvement in interviews with law enforcement and media outlets over the years.
Defense Rejected Confession Claims
Defense lawyer Michael Sanft argued that Davis’s public statements were exaggerated stories designed to sell books and gain attention.
He maintained that prosecutors lacked evidence directly linking his client to the murder beyond the statements Davis later retracted.
Despite those arguments, jurors accepted the prosecution’s case and returned a guilty verdict.
