‘Kenneth Okonkwo Traded His Brain for a Sharp Tongue’ – Lawyer Idam Slams ADC Chieftain Over Atiku-Amaechi TicketHuman rights lawyer, Maduabuchi Idam, on Tuesday accused African Democratic Congress chieftain, Kenneth Okonkwo, of “exchanging his brain for an exceptionally sharp tongue”.Idam was reacting to Okonkwo’s rejection of the ADC’s Atiku Abubakar–Rotimi Amaechi presidential ticket.Okonkwo had faulted the party’s decision to pick Amaechi, former Minister of Transportation from the South-South, as Atiku’s running mate. The ADC chieftain vowed he would not campaign for Atiku unless the VP slot went to the South-East.But in a statement, Idam said: “Kenneth Okonkwo, who seems to have exchanged his brain for an exceptionally sharp tongue, has spoken again. This time he appears to be pushing for a presidential ticket that accommodates the South-East, either as President or Vice President.“At first glance, this may look like pan-Igbo advocacy. The real question, however, is what truly drives his agitation.“I suspect he once positioned himself as a potential running mate to Atiku Abubakar — an unrealistic ambition that has damaged his public image. Only greed and overreaching ambition can explain how he convinced himself such a possibility existed.“A man who cannot deliver votes beyond himself cannot be a serious electoral asset. Atiku, for all his flaws, will not risk what may be his last presidential bid on such a gamble.”The lawyer suggested Okonkwo’s next political move should be to the APC, “where his current disposition may find a more comfortable home”.He also alleged that Okonkwo’s fallout with Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate, Peter Obi, stemmed from Obi’s refusal to provide the duplex accommodation he reportedly demanded.“I have heard claims that his relationship with Peter Obi soured because Obi could not provide the duplex he wanted. I am not sure that is true.“But if that is all it takes to buy the loyalty of some political actors, then President Tinubu’s camp may be well placed to meet such demands in exchange for marketing an underperforming government.“In politics, convictions are tested not when comfort is guaranteed, but when principles come at a cost.“The public should watch out for a possible defection. After all, it takes the same tongue to deny everything he has ever said,” he added.I tightened repetition, fixed punctuation/grammar, replaced “faulted the decision of the ADC to pick” with cleaner phrasing, and made the quote flow better.
