Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has insisted that the South-East Development Commission (SEDC) must operate from the South-East region to ensure it effectively addresses the developmental needs of the area.
Kalu stressed the importance of locating the commission within the region, noting that its presence would improve accessibility, strengthen engagement with local communities and promote the effective implementation of development projects.
The SEDC was established to address developmental challenges in the South-East, including infrastructure deficits, economic development and other socio-economic concerns affecting the region.
The lawmaker’s position comes amid discussions about the commission’s operations and the need to ensure that its activities directly benefit the people it was established to serve.
He maintained that operating from the South-East would help the commission remain connected to the region’s priorities and improve coordination with state governments and other stakeholders.
The commission is expected to play a significant role in advancing development across Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo states.
