The Olu of Warri, His Majesty Ogiame Atuwatse III, has described the Warri Unity Games as a significant initiative capable of promoting peace, unity and ethnic harmony among the diverse communities in Warri and its environs.
The monarch said the sporting event would provide an opportunity for young people from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds to interact, build friendships and develop a stronger sense of shared identity.
According to him, sports remain a powerful tool for bringing people together, particularly in communities with diverse populations and histories.
He stressed that the Warri Unity Games should be viewed as more than a sporting competition, noting that its broader objective was to strengthen peaceful coexistence and encourage collaboration among residents.
Promoting Unity Through Sports
The Olu of Warri said sporting activities could help break down ethnic and social barriers by creating an environment where participants compete fairly while developing mutual respect.
He urged youths taking part in the games to embrace the spirit of sportsmanship and use the platform to build relationships that would extend beyond the competition.
The monarch noted that Warri’s diversity remains one of its greatest strengths, adding that initiatives that encourage people from different backgrounds to interact positively would contribute to the stability and development of the area.
He therefore encouraged participants, organisers and supporters to make unity and peaceful coexistence central to the event.
Opportunity for Youth Development
Beyond promoting peace, the traditional ruler said the games would provide an avenue for discovering and nurturing sporting talents among young people.
He noted that many talented youths require platforms where they can showcase their abilities and gain exposure to opportunities in competitive sports.
The Olu of Warri encouraged young participants to take the competition seriously and see it as an opportunity to develop discipline, teamwork, leadership and other qualities that can benefit them in their personal and professional lives.
He also called on stakeholders to continue supporting grassroots sports development by providing young athletes with access to facilities, coaching and competitions.
Building a Peaceful Warri
The monarch further emphasised the importance of collective efforts in maintaining peace across Warri and its surrounding communities.
He said sustainable development could only take place in an environment where residents feel secure and are willing to work together despite ethnic, cultural or social differences.
The Unity Games, he noted, could contribute to this objective by bringing communities together around a common interest.
He urged community leaders, parents, youth organisations and other stakeholders to support initiatives that promote dialogue, tolerance and peaceful coexistence.
Call for Sustained Collaboration
The Olu of Warri also encouraged organisers to make the Unity Games a sustainable event that can continue to bring communities together in subsequent years.
He said the long-term impact of the initiative would depend on the ability of stakeholders to build on the relationships and understanding created through the competition.
He expressed optimism that the games would become a platform for celebrating Warri’s cultural diversity while promoting peace and developing young sporting talents.
The monarch consequently urged all participants to compete with discipline and respect, stressing that the greatest victory would be the friendships, unity and understanding created among the people.
He said the Warri Unity Games represented an important step towards strengthening social cohesion and demonstrating how sports can be used as a vehicle for peace, youth empowerment and community development.
