NIS Raises Alarm Over Rising Human Trafficking, Irregular Migration Schemes

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has warned Nigerians about a rising wave of fraudulent migration schemes and illegal cross-border activities being carried out by criminal syndicates across the country.

In a statement issued by its Public Relations Officer, DCI A.S. Akinlabi, the Service said vulnerable groups—especially young women and girls—are being deceived with false promises of employment, education, and improved living conditions abroad.

It noted that many victims of these schemes ultimately fall into situations involving forced labour, human trafficking, and other forms of exploitation.

The NIS cautioned that these criminal networks deliberately exploit desperation and misinformation, stressing that any travel arrangement without proper documentation exposes individuals to serious risks.

It reiterated that it is unlawful to exit Nigeria without valid travel documents such as passports and visas, adding that legitimate international travel must follow approved immigration procedures and designated border points.

The Service further advised Nigerians to be wary of unsolicited offers of sponsorship, travel funding, or relocation assistance from unknown individuals or unverified agents.

It urged the public to confirm the authenticity of job offers, scholarships, and travel opportunities through official government channels, and to avoid engaging with facilitators of irregular migration.

The NIS also encouraged citizens to report suspicious activities or persons involved in such schemes to the nearest immigration office or relevant security authorities.

It called on parents, guardians, and community leaders to intensify awareness efforts on the dangers of irregular migration and human trafficking.

Reaffirming its commitment, the Service stated that it remains dedicated to strengthening border security and safeguarding Nigerians from exploitation, while encouraging the public to use its verified communication channels for guidance on travel-related issues.
