Liverpool Forward Leads Preliminary 27-Man Squad

Egyptian star Mohamed Salah will captain his country at the 2026 World Cup, after being named in coach Hossam Hassan’s preliminary 27-man squad.

Salah’s Leadership

  • The 33-year-old forward has been Egypt’s captain since 2019.
  • He has scored 67 goals in 115 appearances for the national team.
  • This summer’s tournament will mark his first major competition since announcing his departure from Liverpool after nine years.

Squad Highlights

  • Omar Marmoush (Manchester City winger) joins the squad.
  • Hamza Abdelkarim, an uncapped 18-year-old Barcelona U19 forward, is included.
  • Mostafa Mohamed (Nantes) has been left out.
  • One player will be dropped after Egypt’s friendly against Russia on 28 May to meet FIFA’s 26-player requirement.

Preparations

Egypt will play Brazil in Cleveland on 6 June before heading into the finals. They are drawn in Group G, facing:

  • Belgium on 15 June
  • New Zealand on 22 June
  • Iran on 27 June
